Rev. Jimmy Cason, age 47, was appointed by Bishop Michael Watson as the Statesboro District Superintendent effective January 1, 2002.

Rev. Cason, who is married to the former Susan Hunter of Brunswick, has served the past four and one half years as pastor of Sandersville UMC.  The Casons, who have a son, Allen, who is a freshman at the University of Georgia, have previously served Vidette, Friendship, and Green's Cut United Methodist Churches (Statesboro District), Associate Pastor of Isle of Hope UMC in Savannah, Lizella UMC, and Leesburg UMC. 

While at Lizella, Rev. Cason led the church in a $350,000 Capital Funds Campaign and groundbreaking for a Family Life Center.  At Leesburg, he led the church in a $1.5 million capital funds program for the building of a new 500-seat sanctuary and educational building.  At the same time, the Leesburg Church became the center for relief and rebuilding efforts for the survivors of the Great Flood of 1994.  Before his marriage to Susan, he served four years as Director of Youth & Children at First UMC of Waynesboro in the Statesboro District.

A native of Savannah, Rev. Cason was reared in Oak Park and is a 1972 graduate of Swainsboro High School. In 1976, he received a B. S. in Journalism from Georgia Southern University, and in 1984, he received a Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.  He is in the final stages of a Doctor of Ministry Degree program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

He has served on the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry as Vice-Chairperson, Chair of the Division and Order of Elders, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Wesley Glen Ministries for Adults with Mental Retardation, Board of Trustees of the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, South Georgia Conference Board of Trustees, Conference Committee on Evangelism, a member of the Leadership Forum, Chair of the Dublin District Council on Ministries, and as a Spiritual Director for the Walk to Emmaus.

Among the honors he has received are the National Trustee of the Year Award from the United Methodist Association, Harry Denman Clergy Evangelism Award, and the Carl Looney Evangelism Scholarship.  He was named as one of 60 young Geogians to the Class of 2000 Leadership Georgia program sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

Cason sees his main objectives in his new role as Statesboro District Superintendent as the spiritual formation of pastors and laypersons, evangelism, and missions and outreach to the community and the world.
